The loud sound of the guitar chord D7(+9) is impressive, and
has strong impact on the lyric "Taxman...". Also the
bass line is very characteristic, and makes tight and fast feelings
of rhythm with its simple kick drum. The count voice at the beginning
is fun because it seems to have a touch of irony for a taxman.
The fine passage of this song is the rhyme from the chorus "If
you drive a car...". It has perfect rhyme with "street,
seat, heat, feet". It is usual to rhyme except Japanese
lyrics, so I am indeed impressed by their feelings. The wild
guitar solo and ending phrase are cool line that they are filled
with anger.

This song's arrangement is used only strings and is never
seen before, so they tries new musical arrangement. This strings
section is not only put chord on but also rhythm and obbligato
at anywhere, it is very cool arrangement as a whole. Also it
is nice idea that the introduction line "Ahh look up all
the lonely people..." is used again in the ending phrase.
However, the only problem is that is very difficult to play this
song at a live performance.

Somehow John's vocal is dull so this song feels sleepy with
the tape reverse sound in strange guitar phrase. Also the notes
at beginning have same pitch during first two measures, and the
its melody line is simple. The cool point in this song should
be the solo bass phrase at the middle of song or the ending.
Its sound is solid but it also makes us sleepy.

Composed by George. It is the India music featuring the sitar
at a whole. The non-Indian sound is only the guitar note with
Bb or the tambourine at 2nd and 4th beat, so it feels strange
comparing with previous songs. The key is C major, also the verse
or the chorus is very simple. George plays the sitar just like
the guitar solo at the ending, but I do not understand what scale
he plays. It may be a scale peculiar to India or Asia.

The key of this song is G major but chord of Bb that is minor
3rd up is used in the introduction and the chorus, so its chord
progression is characteristic. The verse has light backing vocals
but the chorus has solo vocal by Paul, instead of that, the guitar
obbligato comes from the latter half of the chorus. The guitar
phrase that begins with chromatic scale is harmonized to vocal
line "but to love her is to need her...". BTW, the
chorus has strange length of five measures because the end of
the chorus and the beginning of the verse overlap. It is mysterious
that it still does not feel artificial.

Ringo takes main vocal of this song after a long time. The
used chords are normal such as G, D, C, Em, Am, CM7, also constructed
only by the verse and the chorus, so it is very simple song.
However, this song has an unique taste in itself. The friendly
vocal phrase and the movement of the triple harmony in the chorus
make us know again that we can compose real cool song based on
not only musical theory but also feelings. They express the inside
of submarine skillfully by using effected sound at the 2nd block
verse or solo, and this is jolly song because it starts actually
brass band to play after vocal " And the band begins to
play".

There would be various interpretations about mysterious lyric.
Also the used sound or construction of this song is extraordinary.
So many drum fill-ins or syncopated notes are used in the verse,
so the rhythm of this song feels very little beat. And it changes
time signature to 3/4 after the last chorus " when I was
a boy..." suddenly, but after that, it changes to 4/4 time
signature again with returning to the verse. This song has unexpected
construction of irregular meter.

Following the introduction with the low tone of piano and
rhythmic guitar sound, the triplet with snare drum roll makes
an atmosphere liven up. It looks like a shining sun just as song
title. The key of the harmony in the introduction begins with
B major, but it changes to A major from the verse " I need
to laugh...". The piano sound is a feature of this song,
and the piano solo with ragtime style at the 2nd block expresses
it well. Moreover, it changes key to D major at this piano solo.
And backing performance stops before the ending, then vocal phrases
are coming one after another just like a shower. I say once again
but it changes to F major at this ending phrase. I wonder how
many times it changes the key.

My favorite song. The rif by twin lead guitar is performed
from beginning to end, and its melodious line is very cool. It
is a well-considered rif as not only solo but also obbligato.
The bass phrase that goes up octave is like one of Taxman. Also
such a bass phrase is heard in Rain. At the chorus "When
you prized...", it has cool cliche line, and the twin guitar
rif matches well with it. So it has perfect sound making. However,
the last chord is A that is subdominant, so it does not feel
to end. Moreover, I do not understand why Paul repeats high E
note by bass at the ending.

This song is also solo by Paul just like Yesterday. There
is no typical triple harmony or backing harmony, it is very simple
vocal. The guitar sound or tight drums sound is not used, but
the clavichord is used instead of piano. The horn is used at
the solo and the last of the verse, they tries new direction
of their music. The fine passage in this song is rhythmic bass
line. The bass line that begins from "And in her eyes you
see nothing..." is just like going up the stairs with eighth
notes, it goes well with vocal upward line.

It is somehow heartwarming song. The contrast of the non-intonational
vocal in the verse and the grave vocal in the chorus "Well
well well..." is fun. They say that the verse was composed
by John, and the chorus was by Paul. The chord progression of
this song is well considered. The key is A major, and the verse
begins with chord A7, however it ends with chord B7. At the 2nd
time when it enters into the verse again, it makes us think that
the key has changed with chord progression B7->A7. And when
it enters the chorus, it seems to go normally but the truth is
that it has changed key temporarily. At the chorus, it has B->E->B->E
chord progression, so the last chord E is the sub-dominant chord
for the chorus (key of B major) and is also the dominant chord
for the verse (key of A major). This song seems to be a simple
song at a glance but it has innovative idea inside.

This is the third song composed by George in this album. It
is unique to start with fade-in. And the vocal line of this song
also has upstroke of the beat that is peculiar to George. The
piano sound is characteristics of this song. Especially, the
chord from the 5th measure in the verse "When you're here..."
is E7(-9), and it has a piano phrase that its tension notes are
emphasized. At the chorus, the half diminished chord Bm7(-5)
is used, so it has complex chord progression.

The brass sound and its arrangement are much featured in this
song. At the beginning of vocal, it has unexpected dotted eighth
rest note. The fast vocal line in the verse cheers up, and jumps
to high tone at the end of phrase. Moreover, the high tone extends
to a measure, it gives us much impact. In contrast with that,
the other verse has the chord progression with cliche line from
"Woo...", and has the melody that the quarter notes
are emphasized at the ending of 2nd verse "Every single
day...". It seems that the impact at the verse is made to
cool down by this. And at the last phrase in ending, the shouted
vocal phrase has fade-out line with altered notes for the verse.
So Paul's vocal strikes us as strong.

The used chords are almost C major, and the eight measures
melody line only repeats seven times. So this song should be
experimental from another viewpoint. It changes the chord to
Bb/C at only "dying" in "It is not dying...".
The weird lyric and sound effects, the guitar solo with reverse
play of tape, the vocal effects after solo, keeping the drum
pattern that the tom added at upstroke of the 3rd beat is impressive,
and so on..., all of them are beyond of common knowledge. BTW,
there is fast phrase by honky-tonk piano at the ending, I wonder
what they means in that.
